21 Sep 11 Great Habits of Happy People
I often feel like being happy comes naturally to some more than others. You know what I’m talking about. There’s someone right now that you can think of that seems to just always be happy or just radiates with joy. Do you wish you could be that person? Does it put you off that they are so happy, maybe because you are perhaps jealous? What if you could live life as a happy person? What would it take to get you there?
Here are 11 habits you can implement to help you on your way to happy.
Create your own happiness
Choosing to be happy takes a conscience effort. Happy people don’t necessarily wake up happy everyday, but they make it a priority and put in the effort to stay positive. Sure, circumstances come up and it’s easy to get pulled down and sucked into the negative, but happy people are continually checking into their mindset and choosing happy.
They flock together
Happy is contagious, so it makes sense that happy people surround themselves with like-minded individuals that keep the cheerfulness flowing and are spreading the love. You know the saying…Birds of a feather…flock together. Negativity works the same way so steer clear of that draining energy and distance yourself from those toxic emotions.
Resiliency
Failure happens to us all, but happy people bounce back. As opposed to complaining about what would’ve, could’ve, should’ve been – they reflect on the things they are grateful for and look for the solution that will allow them to move on. They do this by making their problems opportunities to learn and reshape themselves, the situation and their life for the better. Pessimism fuels the opposing outcome which reinforces the idea that if you expect bad things to occur you are more likely to experience bad things. It can be hard to distance yourself from these pessimistic views, but looking at the facts can open the door for you to see that things aren’t nearly as bad as they seem.
Let the little things slide
Alarm didn’t go off, you spilled your morning pink drink, and now you’re stuck in traffic. These can easily compile to create a bad day, but remembering they are
inconveniences that happen to the best of us helps to put it all in perspective. You may not be able to change it, but you are in control of your reaction to it. Sometimes those are things I need to help me stop and remember that in the middle of my little mess, I forget how big I’m blessed.
Be grateful
Saying thank you daily and purposefully sets your mind up and helps put an extra spring in your step. Whether you say it out loud or write it down in a journal, being grateful for people, moments, opportunities, things and life itself helps to empower you and gives you tools to cope throughout the day.
I love this Fun Tip from Plexus : “Experience gratitude and save for a special experience. Put a fancy jar next to your bed. Before you go to sleep, think of a few things you’re grateful for. Add a dollar to the jar for each.”
Let it go, let it go
That anger, that grudge, that hate, that hurt, that resentment – let it all go. It holds you back, makes you a prisoner and takes control of your happiness. Free yourself of these negative feelings so that you can shine.
Take care of yourself
Don’t put yourself last because you can’t pour from an empty cup. Quality sleep, clean foods, hydration and exercise all come together to power and recharge happy people.
Trade small talk for deep conversations
Quality conversations build meaningful connections. Happy people don’t gossip, small talk, or judge others. Engaging on a deeper level builds emotional ties and enables them to learn from these experiences.
Giving
Whether it be money or your time, the act of giving surges oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine more so than receiving. As long as you aren’t overextending yourself, giving to others is a great mood boost that is sure to be noticed.
Unplug and lose yourself
Disconnecting from the busy and tech filled world to just be still and present will reset your tired self. A great way to do this is with meditation but even taking some quiet time for yourself will help feed the soul.
Let it show
Show off your happy side with a smile. Didn’t I say happy is contagious. Put that smile on your face and it will help to boost your mood, and when shared with others, will help put a smile on their face too. It’s a win-win.
I hope that these 11 habits help you take control of your happiness and starts you down the path of a more positive life. Invest in yourself daily and be proactive in creating your own happiness.
I’d love to hear what tools you use to stay happy and positive.
